Hey everyone! Tonight I am opening up a bottle of Brooklyn Brewery's Brooklyn Local 1. Just today, Brooklyn Brewery announced that they are building a brewery in Stockholm, Sweden, in partnership with Carlsberg Sweden and D. Carnegie & Co. They are hoping to start brewing some brand new beers in the facility by the end of 2013. In my opinion, this will be the first of several announcements in 2013 of American breweries expanding overseas, and overseas breweries expanding to America (Brewdog anyone?).

Belgian-Style Strong Ale

Brooklyn Local 1 poured a yellow golden color, with a 3 finger width tall head. This is a great looking beer. I poured it into our brand new Golden Monkey tulip glass! Using a tulip glass will draw more of the beer aroma to your nose as you're drinking, and will hold the large head of a Belgian ale. In the nose, I get smells of lemon, banana and yeast. I've gone through about half of this beer, and the alcohol is already kind of hitting me, although I can't even taste a hint of it (I probably should have shared this one!). I'm having a little trouble describing the flavors in this one. It's fruity with lemon, bananas, pineapple and cantaloupe. There's a medium body to this one, and I don't taste a hint of any alcohol. There is a sweet aftertaste involved in this one. The carbonation is pleasant.

Overall: I went into this beer not thinking I was in the mood for a Belgian style beer. Once I poured it, I couldn't stop drinking it. Even for 9.0%, it is extremely refreshing, and a great nightcap. If you're into Belgian style beers, I can't recommend this enough. Cheers!

BJCP: Strong Scotch Ale (9E)

This is the first article in a new series of posts, where I will periodically choose a section from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style guidelines , write about the style, and then drink and publish my tasting notes from some of the commercial examples given by the BJCP. Beer Variety from New Jersey

Just what New Jersey beers are people drinking these days? What are the post popular styles that are coming out of the Garden State? In a previous post , I outlined what 6 bottled Jersey beers I would give to someone to represent New Jersey (kudos to Bryan from This Is Why I'm Drunk for the blog collaboration idea). In this post, I'm going to look at NJ beers a little differently. To get a good sense of the NJ beers people are drinking, I could call up each bar and liquor store around and see what their top selling brands are, call the breweries to see which is top grossing, or see what beers are top rated on any of those beer rating websites. A quicker and easier way to achieve this, I believe, is to simply look up Untappd check-ins! The beer rating websites may give you each brewers top-rated beer, but won't give you top selling. Untappd may be a very small sample size compared to the real sales numbers, but I feel it suits this purpose...
