Sly Fox Odyssey Imperial IPA

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping in! Glad it's Friday? Me too! Tonight I am drinking another canned offering from Sly Fox Brewing Company out of Pottstown, PA. It is their Odyssey Imperial IPA. On the can, the label says that each year the Sly Fox brewers "select their favorite and newly discovered hops to create a big, bold Imperial IPA." I suppose then that the recipe on this beer changes a bit from year to year. I like that! Let's crack this can open...

Sly Fox Odyssey Imperial IPA

Odyssey Imperial IPA pours a beautiful golden amber color with a two finger width white head. There is extravagant lacing, and the beer looks clear (filtered). As soon as the beer was poured, I got a whiff of grassy hops, but before long, the aroma was gone, and I couldn't get much out of it. Odyssey has a VERY unique flavor profile. It starts out very plain. There is a bit of sweet malt and a tickle of carbonation. It is a little grassy up front too. A few seconds after swallowing, and the bitterness arrives! It hits the back and roof of my mouth. It is not an unpleasant bitterness though. It is grassy, peppery, and citrusy. Odyssey has an above average body, and is of average carbonation.

Sly Fox Odyssey Imperial IPA

Overall: Sly Fox's Odyssey is a very interesting Imperial IPA. I don't think I've had one quite like it. It took me more than half the beer to really "get" the beer I was drinking. As the beer sits, it is not one of my favorite Imperial IPAs, but I am worried it may be an older can. There is a smudged date on the can, but it is impossible to read. I probably wouldn't buy this beer in a can again, but if I saw it on tap while I was out I would give it another try.

Dogfish Head Positive Contact

Frankenstorm is on it's way. Bread: Check. Candles: Check. Ice: Check. Beer: Check! The big storm is supposed to strike land here in NJ late Sunday night into early Monday morning, and last until late Tuesday. Kerry and I live in the western part of NJ, so we should be safe from most of it, except for local river flooding. Tonight I'll be reviewing Positive Contact from Dogfish Head. This is their collaboration with Dan the Automator (who I honestly had never heard of before this collaboration). I poured Positive Contact into my Yards Brewing tulip glass. It poured a pale orange, golden color with a two and a half finger width head. Apples, bananas and peppers hit my nose right away. The smell is incredible and strong. BJCP: Strong Scotch Ale (9E)

This is the first article in a new series of posts, where I will periodically choose a section from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style guidelines , write about the style, and then drink and publish my tasting notes from some of the commercial examples given by the BJCP. Beer Digest: Mission St., Hitachino, Weyerbacher

I've had some really great and interesting beers over the last week. In this new post series, I'm going to highlight my favorite beers from the last week or so. Hope you enjoy reading! Suggestions and comments are always welcome! Mission St 2013 Anniversary Ale (Trader Joe's) Steinhaus Brewing Co. (brewed at Firestone Walker in Cali) 8.5% ABV I wasn't really sure what to expect from this beer, but it took me by surprise. They say it is is blend of three different brews, and when it all comes together the final product is an imperial brown ale. There was lots of malt, a little roast, and a full, creamy body. I was surprised how fast I made it through the whole bottle. There wasn't the slightest hint of the 8.5% ABV. If more brown ales tasted like this, I would probably drink them more often.
