East Coast Beer Co. Kick Back Ale

Happy Sunday, y'all!  Hope all of your weekends were fantastic.  I've got a quick review for tonight.  This is my first review of a beer from East Coast Beer Co.  East Coast Beer is based out of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, but they contract brew all of their beer out of state.  I'm not sure if they have any plans of opening their own production brewery.  East Coast Beer's core beers are Beach Haus (an American Pilsner), and the beer I am reviewing today, Kick Back Ale (an Amber Ale).  They also have a winter seasonal called Winter Rental, which I believe is a black lager and an IPA is in the works.

Kick Back Ale pours a reddish amber with a finger width of white head.  There is some decent lacing that is left behind on the glass.  The aroma is of caramel/toffee.  The flavor is also mainly caramel/toffee, with a light citrus presence as the beer warms.  Kick Back Ale is a medium bodied and has medium carbonation.  

Overall:  East Coast Beer Co. Kick Back Ale is pretty average.  It is a very straight forward amber ale.  Definitely a BBQ type beer, or a beer to bring to a friend's house who normally drinks Killian's.  I probably won't buy this one again, but hey, you may like it more than me!

    I've heard that ECBC is planning on opening up their own brewery, but that's a long process and it could be years down the road. The new IPA is out, and I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully they top what they already have out, which I consider to be just good beers but nothing special. Solid for drinking a few of on a hot day, but not much else. Cheers!

      I will eventually try the IPA if I find it somewhere on draft or if I find it where I can get it in a mix-6-pack. I'm definitely hoping for something with a bit more flavor than their Kick Back Ale. Not bad, but I'm just looking for a little more.

Beer Digest: Mission St., Hitachino, Weyerbacher

I've had some really great and interesting beers over the last week.  In this new post series, I'm going to highlight my favorite beers from the last week or so.  Hope you enjoy reading!  Suggestions and comments are always welcome! Mission St 2013 Anniversary Ale (Trader Joe's) Steinhaus Brewing Co. (brewed at Firestone Walker in Cali) 8.5% ABV I wasn't really sure what to expect from this beer, but it took me by surprise.  They say it is is blend of three different brews, and when it all comes together the final product is an imperial brown ale.  There was lots of malt, a little roast, and a full, creamy body.  I was surprised how fast I made it through the whole bottle.  There wasn't the slightest hint of the 8.5% ABV.  If more brown ales tasted like this, I would probably drink them more often. BJCP: Strong Scotch Ale (9E)

This is the first article in a new series of posts, where I will periodically choose a section from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style guidelines , write about the style, and then drink and publish my tasting notes from some of the commercial examples given by the BJCP.  Now, I'm not sure if I will ever actually take the exam to become a beer judge, but I think this will be a fun exercise to learn more about beer! Fair warning, I will not be doing the sections of the BJCP style guidelines in any sort of order.  Whichever kinds of beer I am craving is what I will be writing about!
