Hey all, thanks for stopping in to this week's Beer Digest. This is the fourth installment, and I am highlighting two beers from two different Pennsylvania breweries, Weyerbacher and Round Guys Brewing. Before I get into the beers, I want to thank Josh from Short on Beer for including me in his video series, "Conversations with Beer Bloggers." Check out our conversation, where we talk about how I got into craft beer and beer blogging!
Viridis Lupulus
IPA
7.5% ABV, 95 IBUs
The team over at Weyerbacher Brewing have come up with a new seasonal beer, Viridis Lupulus, and it is an IPA. They plan on releasing Viridis Lupulus in late spring or early summer, and will feature a different lineup of hops for each release. According to Wiktionary, viridis comes from the Latin verb vireo, which translates to "to be verdant, to sprout." Lupulus comes from Humulus lupulus, and is the species name for the common hop. So, Viridis Lupulus kind of translates to sprouting of hops or verdant hops!
In this release of Viridis Lupulus, Weyerbacher used a mixture of Apollo, Calypso, Centennial and Galaxy hops. The hops, mainly fruity and piney, completely take the forefront in aroma and flavor. It has a rather full body and a high amount of carbonation. Viridis Lupulus provides a fantastic golden/amber color, and a huge, white, foamy head that leaves a magnificent lacing behind. This is a pretty good brew that comes cork and caged in a 750 mL bottle. Give it a try if you see it!

Fat Bob XVII
Belgian style Tripel
8.5% ABV
Round Guys Brewing is a semi-new brewery located in downtown Lansdale, PA. They have a pub at their brewery to serve guests their beer with paninis, brats, chili and salads. I haven't yet had the opportunity to stop into the pub, but one night on my way back to NJ I found the Round Guys Fat Bob XVII sitting in the beer fridge at Blue Dog Pub, just waiting for someone to take it home. I quickly picked it up, along with a few other beers, and I'm glad I did. Fat Bob XVII is a tripel brewed with rye and Saaz hops. It has a light honey color with a peppery, banana aroma. Very aromatic. The flavor is full of cloves and banana, not too heavy, but still a sipper at 8.5% ABV. The drawing on the bottle is great, too. I can't wait to try more from Round Guys!

Have not come across the Viridis Lupulus, but I'll be keeping an eye open for it now!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely one of the more hop-forward beers I've had from Weyerbacher. Good luck finding it!
